A Man of Honor: An Evening Celebrating the Service of Carl Brashear

As Belle Grove and the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley participate in the Blue Star Museums program this summer, we are pleased to honor U.S. Navy master diver Carl Brashear in this special online program. Our featured speaker will be Chief Warrant Officer 5 Phillip Brashear, President of the Carl Brashear Foundation. He will discuss his father’s amazing journey to become the first African American to graduate from the Diving & Salvage School and to eventually become a master diver for the U.S. Navy. Mr. Brashear excelled in his career despite enduring racism and service injury that resulted in the amputation of his left leg. The 2000 major motion picture film Men of Honor was based on his life and starred Cuba Gooding Jr. and Robert DeNiro. Today his legacy continues through the Carl Brashear Foundation and this program will discuss the outreach that it provides.
