An Afternoon with Nelly Madison Hite

Enjoy an afternoon learning about Nelly Madison Hite, younger sister of James Madison who married Isaac Hite Jr. of Belle Grove. Historian Robin Young will discuss new research that she has undertaken to learn more about Nelly’s life and the enslaved women who were her wet nurses and nursery workers. Belle Grove Executive Director Kristen Laise will discuss a reproduction of the dress Nelly wears in her Charles Peale Polk portrait, which hangs in the Belle Grove Parlor. Nelly has often been overlooked, and these two historians are excited to share their insights and acknowledge her contributions.

This event will take place at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, 901 Amherst St., Winchester.
