Descendants Day in Honor of Juneteenth
Join us for the inaugural Descendants Day in Honor of Juneteenth as we celebrate the legacy of the enslaved through faith, food, and music!
We will start the day with a 9 a.m. service at Walnut Springs Christian Church, 1905 Oranda Rd, Strasburg, VA 22657 to honor the life of Benjamin Tanny, a man enslaved at Belle Grove who was baptized into the Walnut Springs congregation in 1831.
Rev. Wendell Schurtz of Walnut Springs Christian Church and Rev. Patti Brown of the Strasburg United Methodist Church will lead a brief service and then we will make a half-mile memorial walk along Meadow Mills Road, which Benjamin Tanny would have used to walk the two miles between Belle Grove and the church. Light refreshments will be served.
11 a.m.-2 p.m. activities at Belle Grove will include:
- Food for sale by The Loaded FoodTruck and Pan D Endz Cuisine
- Gospel Music Performances
- Genealogy and Local History Workshops
- Tours of the historic Manor Home and Memorial Quilts to those Enslaved at Belle Grove
