Mennonite and Brethren refugees did something surprising on October 7, 1864, as they fled from their homes during General Philip Sheridan's burning of the Shenandoah Valley. They sang praises to God on the banks of Cedar Creek near Belle Grove. The Harmonia Sacra Singers will perform several of these hymns, which are featured in the popular book, Peggy's War. Author Karl Rhodes will introduce each song by discussing the historical and literary context that determined which hymns he selected for his book.
The Harmonia Sacra is the first Mennonite songbook printed in English. It was compiled by Joseph Funk in Singers Glen, VA in 1832 and is still in use today. Learn more here.
Peggy's War is available for purchase at the Belle Grove Gift Shop.
